Chapin family papers, 1862-1870.

The collection consists of correspondence from 1862-1870 to Mrs. Joel (Amelia) Chapin of Enfield, Connecticut from friends of J. Leander Chapin regarding his imprisonment and death at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. The letters discuss the hiring of Amelia Johnson in Andersonville to care for the grave and erect a stone. Johnson's letters contain very descriptive comments about the cemetery and stockade. Also in the collection are three documents concerning death benefits paid to Mrs. Chapin for her son's military service.
